58% of all refugees live in cities – not camps

Refugees move to cities to gain a greater sense of independence and normality that camps can't offer. Though cities offer more opportunities than a camp, it can still difficult for refugees to achieve their ambitions. Being outside of a refugee camp provides its own set of challenges. Poverty, stigma, and the denial of basic human rights are just some of the obstacles urban refugees face on a daily basis.

Why urban refugees?

Many people do not realise that the majority of refugees no longer live in camps. The humanitarian orgnisations have been slow to change their policies to this change. As a result assistance to urban refugees is nearly non-existent despite the huge number of refugees living in cities.

We support Urban Refugees so because they're work is incredibly important and is making a real difference.

Incubation programmes

Urban Refugees are involved in a number of different initiatives to help refugees live a dignified life. The money raised by KarmaGarms will be used to support their Incubation Programmes in developing countries.

The Incubation Programmes set up by Urban Refugees provides financial and administrative support to local refugee-led organisations. Training is also given in order ensure these organisations can continually respond to the needs of the community by being self-sufficient.

"Given the very limited assistance of aid agencies in cities, refugee-led organisations provide the bulk of the assistance to their own communities. We support those organisations to develop their capacity to organise, plan and advocate for themselves. This includes: technical assistance and training, support in governance, fundraising and communication mapping. We believe self-reliance is key to promote sustainable solutions"
